Returning to Brazilian Jiu jitsu After a Long Break

Returning to Brazilian Jiu jitsu After a Long Break

How long has it been since you have attended a BJJ class? Having to take a break from Brazilian Jiu jitsu training is unavoidable, whether due to injury, illness, financial issues, scheduling, family or work priorities are among the common reasons why people go on BJJ hiatus.

Injuries can take place at any belt level and should not discourage you from returning to BJJ. Still others fail to return fearing that they have fallen too far behind their peers. Setting unrealistic expectations can also result in discouragement, and this is not limited to BJJ only. You should not let a temporary hurdle halt you from continuing to develop your skills.

Going back to training after a long break means taking it slow and easing your way back into training. Also remember not to compare yourself to any other members of the club. Focus on your own journey and progression into BJJ. Finding the motivation to do so can be one of the biggest hurdles. So focus on your short term goals as well as long term goals.

When going back to BJJ training after a long break, you need to be mentally prepared for class. Inform your instructors and training partners that you are returning from a long break. You would need a few days to access some of your prior knowledge and muscle memory and your teammates would work with you as you regain your skills and knowledge. Conditioning can take time and it is best not to rush things. There is no need to train a hundred percent intensity from your first days of coming back to BJJ classes.

While you may take it slow, consistency is the key. If you put significant amount of time training on the mats, you will surely develop the skills needed to progress to the next level. Perseverance and having continuity in BJJ training is the key.

Your instructors are there to help you in all aspects of BJJ. So, if you have been on a prolonged break from BJJ, don’t be afraid to take the plunge. Today is the best day to get back on the mats and continue your training towards the next BJJ belts.
