Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a very methodical technical martial arts for those in middle age who are not looking for something that is fast, explosive, but want something that is practical for the use in self-defense. Brazilian Jiu jitsu allows you to control your assailant/opponent with your body. You have better control of your body as well as the opponent. This provides great self-defense training for middle-aged men and women either to hold an opponent/assailant down or to control the situation until help arrives or to control the situation until the threat is neutralized.
Typically, a person with a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu jitsu can defend themselves against any person off the streets. A blue belt will have majority of the basics of Brazilian Jiu jitsu in their arsenal and they are able to defend themselves. Just imagine a blue belt rolling with a fresh white belt, that blue belt will have significant advantage on the mats. This will give them substantial confidence that their BJJ will be very effective in a self-defense situation.
Every day the Brazilian Jiu jitsu practitioner would be practicing against resistance, practicing technique, practicing positioning of their body in order to maximize a technique that will potentially save their lives.
The difference between Brazilian Jiu jitsu and other martial arts is that you do have less chance of getting a concussion, you also have the ability to practice at 100% without severely hurting your partner and truly is a community/environment-based training where you depend on your training partners’ various sizes and experiences to help you advance in the art.
As for middle-aged practitioners, BJJ allows you to use intelligence versus youthful speed and explosion in order to excel in this sport. You will notice that a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu fight in the upper levels of blackbelt world championships of Pan American Championships, you will notice that blackbelts have a longer fight time but they also have a more technical fight moving millimeter to millimeter in order to gain that slight advantage in order to sweep or attack an opponent. Sometimes to a non-practitioner, this may seem boring but to a person who knows Jiu-jitsu, this is an awesome, beautiful sight to see the incremental changes to gain the advantage.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is also very technical and ever-evolving. The BJJ now that you see in competitions is very different from the original Brazilian Jiu-jitsu style that was developed by the Gracie family. The Gracie family is the foundation for BJJ but since then, more athletes, other martial arts such as catch wrestling, has been incorporated and integrated into Brazilian Jiujitsu so this art is almost unrecognizable from the original style of BJJ from the Gracie family.
Even Gracie Jiu jitsu’s own team has evolved and is necessary due to the advancements in knowledge as well as integration of other grappling arts into BJJ such as Greco Roman Wrestling, catch wrestling, Sambo, and other grappling arts of the world. Even sumo has been incorporated into Brazilian Jiu jitsu in some respects.
