Years ago I wrote about the flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria that is known for causing necrotizing fasciitis or they call it flesh-eating bacteria. When I wrote that years ago, it wasn't as popular but I saw two of these patients in my office under suspicion of such. Both of these patients were in the backwater and unfortunately, neither one wore water shoes, boat shoes or any kind of foot protective device when they jumped off their boat. Luckily, they came in early and were treated accordingly.
On October 7, 2015 -- Fort Myers News Press published a story about a man who lost his life secondary to necrotizing fasciitis after fishing in Bonita Springs. He suffered a leg injury, contracted this bacteria, went up his leg through his GI system and eventually unfortunately killed him.
This necrotizing fasciitis bacteria moves very fast, so if you get a cut on your foot or leg in the backwater or even on the beach and you develop severe redness or you see blisters on your foot and leg, this can be flesh eating bacteria symptoms and you should immediately get yourself to the emergency room or urgent care center.
Hurricane Ian brings this bacteria back into the limelight. After #hurricaneian, there has been a rise in reported cases of Vibrio vulnificus and has led to numerous #footinfections. Vibrio infection can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, when the tissue around a wound die, sometimes referred to as #flesheatingbacteria.
Infectious disease may also exist in other places. This may lead to concerns regarding infectious diseases in gyms. Gyms can be an area where germs, fungi, and viruses can be year-round because these organisms thrive on sweat that gets left on exercise equipment and mats. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes infections of the lungs and respiratory tract. Respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. RSV was discovered in 1956 and has since caused annual outbreaks of respiratory illnesses in all age groups. RSV or Respiratory Syncytial Virus can live on surfaces such as counters or doorknobs, making people sick when they touch something that’s contaminated. RSV can spread quickly, causing infections of the lungs and respiratory tract. Symptoms include congested or runny nose, dry cough, low-grade fever, sore throat, sneezing, and headache.
Another virus of concern today is COVID-19, caused by infection with a coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2. Coronavirus Disease 2019 was a problem in enclosed spaces but vaccines, enhanced safety precautions, and milder variants of the novel coronavirus have changed the equation.
Because Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Coronavirus Disease 2019 are both respiratory types of viruses, some symptoms may be similar. Having RSV may lower immunity and increase the risk of getting COVID-19 and if they occur together, this can worsen the severity of illness.
